The Path to Healing from a Loss August 8, 2018

At some point in our lives, just about all of us will experience grief. While it is not a pleasant experience, it is an important part of the healing process. If you or someone you know is experiencing grief, there are steps you can take to make the process just a bit less painful.

Don’t Rush Yourself

There can be a tendency to “rush through” grief, trying to get it over with. The problem is grief moves at its own pace. Being anxious to get past it can often only add stress and prolong the healing process.

Don’t Isolate Yourself

Many times those who are grieving want to be alone. It can be helpful, however, to spend time with others. While spending time with others who are grieving can help share in your grief, you may want to spend time with others as well. Stay connected with friends, co-workers and family. Get out and schedule a lunch with a friend or take a day trip to a favorite place.

Take Care of Yourself

If you’ve ever wondered why so many people bring casserole dishes and cook for someone who lost a loved one, it is because there is a tendency for those grieving not to take very good care of themselves. They may not eat properly, not get enough sleep or not get enough exercise. It is very important that those grieving take care of themselves. Exercise, in particular, can be very helpful in creating metabolic changes that can help the reduce sadness.

Do Things You Enjoy

If you have a hobby, stay active in it. Get out and enjoy a movie, play or concert. Take a walk, read a book, or take in a sporting event. We can magnify the effects of grief when we give up on people or things we love. Do things you enjoy with those you enjoy being with.

Reach Out if You Need Help

At the very least, you should be able to talk with a close friend or family member. If you are feeling extremely depressed or are finding it challenging to return to work or your normal routine, you may want to reach out to a doctor, clergyman or one of the many support groups in the area.

The Role of Final Services in Dealing with Grief

At The Cremation Society of Northern Kentucky, we often talk with families who question why they put themselves through final services when the grieving process is so difficult already. It is because final services play an important role in the process. It allows us the time to absorb the changes in our lives and appreciate those who care about us. It allows us the room to be sad, cry, and remember a loved one fondly. It is difficult, but it gives us permission to say goodbye.

It is why pre-planning can be so important. It takes some of the burden and many of the decisions following a death off the shoulders of the family. It can be a wonderful gift for those left behind. If you would like to discuss your final arrangements, including cremation, please contact us. We would be proud to assist you.
