One of the happiest days of having a pet is when that pet is first brought home. The saddest, of course, is when we have to say goodbye upon their death. In between, they serve as companions, playmates, friends and family members. It is no wonder the loss of a pet can be so devastating. We often tell ourselves that perhaps we shouldn’t feel that way or we’re being silly to be so sad. The reality is the sadness is real and it shouldn’t be ignored.
Here are some steps you can take at the death of a pet.
Understand that Everyone Processes the Loss of a Pet Differently
Don’t be hard on yourself if the death of a pet is difficult. Likewise, you should understand others in your family may not take the death like you do. All you can do is allow yourself to grieve, and support those around you who are grieving in their own way.
Find a Way to Say Goodbye
When someone we know dies, there are societal forces in place to help support us. We write obituaries, have visiting hours, share grief with family and friends and have final services. Much of this is missing when we lose a pet. We can, however, maintain some of these aspects following the death of a dog or cat. If there are children in the family a pet obituary can be created detailing favorite moments. It is here that the decision to having a pet cremated can be healing. Decisions can be made on whether the cremains should be kept in a special urn in the house or perhaps buried. These are all steps that can help us say goodbye to our beloved pet.
Don’t Replace A Pet Too Quickly
Because losing a pet can be so painful, it can be tempting to believe replacing it will help ease the pain. The reality is, it is hard to “replace” a pet. You may get another one or attempt to get a substitute, but replacing a pet too quickly is rarely a good idea. Give yourself time to grieve. When you feel ready, you may want to go out in search of another pet, but avoid the temptation to view it as a replacement.
Accept that Things will Change
Pets hold a special place in our lives. They may welcome us home in the afternoon, cuddle up with us while we watch tv and we may take them for nightly walks. All of these aspects change when they pass and it has a real impact on our lives. It may be difficult to accept, but accept it we must. We need to be grateful for the time we had with them.
